Troopers and corrections officers recruit at the Mat-Su Job Center

Two Alaska public-safety agencies are recruiting this week at the Mat-Su Job Center in Wasilla, at 877 W. Commercial Drive.

The Department of Public Safety sends a trooper recruiter, Freddie Wells, for a one-time session Wednesday, Aug. 5, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wells can talk through current openings and career paths, whether someone is ready to apply or just looking, and can be reached at (907) 280-8665. The department lists an average first-year trooper salary of $126,000, a 22.5% retirement match and a $10,000 moving allowance, and recruits must be at least 21 and complete a four-month paid academy in Sitka.

The Department of Corrections runs a standing session at the same center every Friday, from 3 to 4 p.m., part information workshop and part recruiting stop. It advertises full-time correctional officer jobs with advancement potential and what it calls competitive pay plus shift differentials, though it lists no salary figure.
