What happens to your tip
Who reads it. Alaska News’s editors. Tips are never published as they are sent.
What we keep. Your tip and your files, with location and other hidden details removed from photos, audio and video. Your name, email and Signal only if you chose to let an editor contact you. A scrambled form of your network address for 48 hours, to limit abuse; then it is deleted, and it cannot be matched to an account.
Your code.After you send, you get a code. With it you can read editors’ replies, answer them and add files. We keep only a scrambled form of it, so we cannot recover a lost code.
If an editor pursues it. The text of your tip is processed by outside AI services that help this newsroom research and draft stories. Your name and contact details are not sent with it.
The network.The site is carried by Cloudflare and hosted on Railway, which handle every request, as any site’s network and host do. Removing hidden details from files does not remove what a tip’s own words, pictures or voice may say about who sent it.
On Signal instead. A message to alaskanews.48 is encrypted end to end and goes only to our Signal account, not through this site. We see your Signal profile name, so change it first if you want to stay anonymous there.
