A Wasilla workshop will walk job seekers through federal applications

State labor staff will help job seekers navigate the federal hiring system Thursday at the Mat-Su Job Center in Wasilla, walking through how to apply on USAJOBS and how to write a resume that works for federal jobs.

The session runs 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 877 Commercial Drive. It's aimed at veterans but open to anyone.

One thing worth checking first: the state's notice doesn't mention needing an appointment, but the job center's own workshop flyer lists USAJOBS sessions as appointment-only. A call ahead is probably worth it.

Federal work has been getting harder to find in Alaska. The state lost 4.5 percent of its federal jobs last year, among the steepest drops in the country, and 15.8 percent over two years. The application rules have tightened too — USAJOBS now caps resumes at two pages.
