Mat-Su Job Center offers free drop-in computer tutoring Tuesdays and Thursdays
The Alaska Literacy Program offers free one-on-one computer help Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:30 to 3:30 pm at the Mat-Su Job Center, 877 Commercial Dr. in Wasilla. No appointment is needed.
The Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development sent a bulletin about the sessions Thursday. It sent one in May with the same days and hours, which Alaska News reported May 18.
Tutors help with email and internet basics, searching and applying for jobs online, avoiding scams and staying safe on the web, and using Word, Excel, Google Docs and Sheets. They also help with attaching a resume to an email, basic Microsoft Office skills and other everyday technology questions. The May bulletin also listed paying bills or connecting with loved ones online, translating websites and typing practice.
The job center's resource room has computers for online applications, along with printers, copiers and scanners, a Mat-Su Job Center staff member said in a department video in May.
The Alaska Literacy Program has operated since 1974 and has a Mat-Su office in Palmer. It charges $25 per eight-week quarter for its regular classes, which run three hours of instruction a week. It offers a sliding fee scale for students who cannot afford the $25. Archived copies of its website show the fee message appeared sometime between May 2025 and January.
The state's draft workforce plan for 2026 and 2027 says uneven broadband access and digital literacy gaps limit participation in online education, workforce services and job searches, particularly in rural areas. The plan lists Alaska Literacy Programs among its partners and says partners coordinate basic digital literacy skill development. It does not mention these sessions.
