UAF men's and women's basketball teams each open with two 100-point wins
The University of Alaska Fairbanks men's and women's basketball teams opened their seasons in Fairbanks this weekend by scoring at least 100 points in all four of their games.
On Friday afternoon, the women beat Pacific Union College 121-35. That night, the men beat Northwest Indian College 122-65. It was the first time both Nanooks teams had scored 100 points on the same day, according to the university's athletics department. On Saturday, both did it again: the women won 118-62, and the men won 108-64.
For the women, it had been almost 20 years. Friday was the program's first triple-digit game since 2006, and its 121 points tied for the second-most in program history. The Nanooks forced 61 Pacific Union turnovers, with 41 steals, and held the Pioneers to 12 of 43 shooting.
They did it with a mostly new team. Twelve players on this season's roster are newcomers, including four freshmen, and head coach Michael Ricks is in his second season. One of those freshmen, Siri Lindsey, a 5-foot-3 guard from Portland, Ore., led the team in scoring both nights, with 20 points Friday and 26 on Saturday.
The men, coached by Frank Ostanik, scored 122 points on Friday, the sixth-most in program history. Davis Crilly, a senior, scored 30, missing only one of his 12 shots from the field and making all six of his 3-pointers. The Nanooks went on an 18-0 run in the first four minutes and led 66-17 at halftime. On Saturday, Crilly added 22 points and Tyriq Luke scored 21.
All four games were against teams from outside the Nanooks' conference, the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. Pacific Union, from Angwin, Calif., plays in the NAIA's California Pacific Conference.
Fans wearing sports jerseys got in free on Friday, and Saturday was Pajama Night.
Both teams now head to Hawaii. The women play Hawaii-Hilo on Tuesday, and both teams play Hawaii Pacific on Friday and Chaminade on Saturday.
