Fairbanks City Hall shows lifelong Alaskan Taylor Buxton's metal art through Nov. 20
Metal artwork by lifelong Alaskan Taylor Buxton, inspired by the state's auroras and mountains, is on display at Fairbanks City Hall through Nov. 20.
The show, in the City Council Chambers, is free to visit, according to Fairbanks Arts. Fairbanks Arts scheduled a First Friday reception for Friday evening so visitors could meet the artist.
Buxton works under the name Vibrance Metal Art. His pieces draw on Alaska's landscapes, "from glowing auroras to striking mountain scenes," the City of Fairbanks said. Fairbanks Arts describes the work as pairing the strength of metal with bright color and refined technique.
Many of the pieces on his website are three-panel works, featuring wolves, bears, moose and bush planes as well as auroras, with titles like Sunset Bush Plane/Moose, Rainbow Aurora and Aurora Trees/Water. The site says every piece is a handmade original and that pieces can hang outdoors.
The work in the show is for sale. Fairbanks Arts' online store listed 10 of Buxton's pieces on Nov. 7, priced from $743 to $3,375.
The show is part of First Friday, Fairbanks' monthly round of exhibit openings and receptions, which Fairbanks Arts calls a longstanding local tradition. The group was founded in 1966 as the Alaska Association for the Arts and was recognized by the City Council as the city's official community arts agency in 1989.
City Hall, at 800 Cushman St., is open weekdays from 8 am to 5 pm, but will be closed Nov. 11 for Veterans Day.
