UAA wants to pour wine at the gallery opening — under a 'sporting' license

Intermission at a UAA dance recital may soon come with a glass of wine. The Anchorage Assembly takes up beer-and-wine permits Aug. 4 for two more campus venues — the Fine Arts Building and the Wendy Williamson Auditorium — where the events on the docket run to concerts, gallery openings, lectures and theater, not exactly a full-contact crowd.

The quirk is the paperwork: the campus concessionaire, NANA Management Services, is applying under Alaska's "sporting activity or event" license, the same category that already covers UAA's actual sports venues. Here it would cover the string quartet. Both permits would allow sales seven days a week, and the university already pours at three other campus spots.

The Planning Department heard not a peep of public objection, and staff recommend approval.
