Three anglers cited for over-limit sockeye on the Middle Kenai River

Three anglers, a 67-year-old Palmer man, a 31-year-old Denver man and a 68-year-old Kenai man, were cited Aug. 1 on the Middle Kenai River for exceeding the sockeye salmon limit, Alaska Wildlife Troopers said. The excess fish were seized and donated to charity. The charges are accusations.

The dispatch, posted Aug. 15, does not say how many fish they kept or by how much they exceeded the limit.

The Kenai River Late-Run Sockeye Salmon Management Plan sets a baseline of three per day and six in possession, and lets the commissioner raise those limits by emergency order once the run tops 2.3 million fish. The middle river lies downstream of Skilak Lake, where the limit had been doubled to six per day and 12 in possession, the limit they are accused of exceeding.

Today the limit drops back. The department says the sockeye limit downstream of Skilak Lake returns to three per day and six in possession on Aug. 16.
