Troopers cite 12 dipnetters on the Kenai in one day

Alaska Wildlife Troopers wrote at least 12 dipnet citations on the Kenai in a single day, July 25, at the height of the sockeye run. Every person cited listed an Anchorage or Wasilla address.

Eight were cited for fishing during a closed period, six of them at South Beach. Three Anchorage men, ages 61, 64 and 77, were cited for fishing in a closed area. A 60-year-old was cited for not recording his catch. Most bail was set at $120.

The rules are short: 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., at the mouth of the river, write down what you keep. Anglers say they are easier to trip over than that makes them sound.

Charges are accusations, and everyone cited is presumed innocent. The season ends July 31.
