Juneau's glacial outburst flood crested Thursday at 14.7 feet, above major flood stage

Juneau has been responding to glacial outburst flooding, with nearly 1,900 homes inside the borough's local flood advisory area. "If you are in a flood zone, evacuation is advised," the city's flood response page says.

The Mendenhall River crested Thursday at 14.7 feet — above the 14-foot major flood stage — and had fallen back to near 5 feet by Friday midday, with no flood warning in effect.

State road officials flagged a flooding risk Wednesday evening on the Forest Service road near the Back Loop Bridge Trailhead, on the west side of the Mendenhall Valley. The site is near the trailhead the U.S. Forest Service closed in June to build a flood wall. The Forest Service said a new earthen berm near Back Loop Road would "provide flood protection for Back Loop Road and downstream portions of the community."

The borough has been routing some west-side traffic onto Mendenhall Loop Road and telling motorists to avoid Back Loop Bridge. It is running a flood information hotline at (907) 500-0890.
