Montana Creek topped flood stage in Juneau's Mendenhall Valley, with advisories into Tuesday morning

Water ran over the Montana Creek Road low-water crossing overnight into Sept. 1 after Montana Creek rose above flood stage in Juneau's Mendenhall Valley.

The National Weather Service in Juneau measured the creek at 14.7 feet at 10 p.m. Aug. 31 at the Back Loop Bridge gauge. Flood stage there is 14.5 feet.

Between 1 and 1.5 inches of rain fell in the valley in the six hours before the advisory, with another quarter to three quarters of an inch possible.

At 14.5 feet, water flows over the low-water crossing and spreads into undeveloped fields along Mendenhall Loop Road. At 15.5 feet, it reaches yards on the northwest side of that road.

The Weather Service lowered the creek's minor flood stage in 2023 "based upon observations of minor impacts around the low water crossing along Montana Creek Road."

A second advisory issued at 6:20 a.m. said flooding continued, the creek still at flood stage at 6 a.m., and ran to 9:30 a.m.
