Wind gusts to 50 mph are coming, and the trees still have their leaves

Anchorage is under a wind advisory from 7 am Tuesday to noon Wednesday, with south to southeast winds of 15 to 25 mph and gusts reaching 40 to 50. Forecasters want loose things in yards put away and drivers of high-profile vehicles paying attention.

The leaves are the reason to expect outages. "Trees are still mostly green and fully leafed," the advisory notes, which gives the wind more to push against and makes branches likelier to come down on lines.

The wind arrives from the southeast Tuesday morning, bending into town off Turnagain Arm, and stays on the south and west sides until it turns southerly and spreads across the Bowl in the afternoon. It eases overnight into Wednesday. The storm driving it is moving into Alaska's western coast.

A separate advisory covers the northwest and southwest Kenai Peninsula from 4 pm Tuesday to noon Wednesday, with the same speeds and the strongest wind along the coast from Anchor Point north through Kenai and Nikiski.
