Strong winds hit the Anchorage Hillside and Turnagain Arm, with outages possible

Strong southeast winds are raking the Anchorage Hillside and the Seward Highway along Turnagain Arm, gusting as high as 60 mph, under a wind advisory running through 10 a.m. Tuesday. The National Weather Service warns of possible power outages and urges people to secure loose belongings.

The Hillside and the Turnagain Arm stretch of the Seward Highway are taking the brunt, with sustained winds of 25 to 35 mph. West and South Anchorage can expect 20 to 30 mph and gusts of 40 to 50. Midtown and downtown should see less. The advisory covers Anchorage, Eagle River, Eklutna, the Hillside, Indian and Upper Eagle River, with winds expected to ease Tuesday morning.
