Skagway is under another wind advisory, gusts to 40 mph through Saturday

Skagway is in for another blow. A wind advisory runs until 7 p.m. Saturday, with south winds of 15 to 25 mph and gusts up to 40 mph, and forecasters are telling people to secure loose gear, furniture and signage now before it picks up. Strong enough to toss around anything not tied down and knock down tree limbs, the National Weather Service says, and enough to make travel tricky.

It is a familiar situation for the town this summer. Skagway has seen repeated wind advisories in recent months, including a run of three in a row on July 23, when gusts of 45 mph were clocked at Taiya Inlet and the Skagway Docks during peak cruise season, and another just five days ago that forecast gusts up to 45 mph.

And the wind here can climb well past this. Back in January, a high wind warning for Skagway, the Haines Borough and Yakutat forecast gusts near 65 mph.
