Wind hammered Skagway into early Friday

South winds gusting to 45 mph blew through Skagway and Taiya Inlet on Thursday, strong enough that forecasters extended the wind advisory three separate times before it finally lapsed at 1 a.m. Friday.

Sustained winds ran 20 to 30 mph, with the strongest gusts clocked at the Skagway Docks and across Taiya Inlet Thursday evening. The National Weather Service in Juneau warned of downed tree limbs, scattered power outages, and anything left loose outdoors going airborne.

Forecasters had expected the wind to ease by 10 p.m. It did not, and the final advisory pushed the window three more hours into the morning.
