Troopers pursue leads in Chevak missing man case as search pauses

An adult male reported missing in Chevak on Aug. 7 remained missing after search efforts continued through Aug. 11, the Alaska State Troopers said.

The Chevak Police Department organized the first search using drones and boats. Searchers did not locate anything, according to a dispatch troopers posted Wednesday. Search and rescue teams from Chevak and Hooper Bay continued the search through Aug. 11.

Troopers have not released the man's name or age. The dispatch does not describe where he was last seen or the circumstances of his disappearance. The account comes entirely from the trooper dispatch, which contains no statement from the man's family or from village searchers. The C Detachment is handling the case and will continue to follow up on leads as they are received, troopers said.

The search is one of several in Western and Southwest Alaska this summer that turned on local resources. Troopers reported that a woman missing near Port Heiden since early on Aug. 7 was found the next afternoon by a local pilot about five miles off a trail, after searchers used ATVs, fixed-wing aircraft and U.S. Coast Guard assistance. In Southeast, the Klawock Search and Rescue team located a 23-year-old hiker on Sunnahae Mountain with a drone in July. Not every case closes. Troopers reported in June that Vernon Paul, 71, of Kwigillingok remains missing after the October 2025 storm that struck the Kuskokwim coast.

Troopers have not announced a scheduled resumption of the Chevak search.
