Troopers arrest Nanwalek man on domestic violence charges

Alaska State Troopers arrested a Nanwalek man Tuesday on charges of assaulting his partner in front of three children, according to a dispatch posted by the Alaska Department of Public Safety.

Troopers responded to a 4:43 a.m. disturbance report in Nanwalek and determined that Terence P. Swenning, 27, had physically assaulted his partner while three children were present. Troopers arrested Swenning later that day and remanded him to the Homer Jail on one count of fourth-degree assault, domestic violence, and three counts of assault in the presence of a child, domestic violence.

Alaska law provides an enhanced domestic violence-related offense for committing certain assaults in the presence of a child. That can result in separate counts based on each child who witnesses the assault. Fourth-degree assault is a class A misdemeanor in Alaska.

Swenning is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
