Mat-Su Job Center hosts free USAJOBS workshop Thursday in Wasilla

State labor staff will walk job seekers through the federal hiring system Thursday, Sept. 17, at the Mat-Su Job Center in Wasilla. The USAJOBS Informational Workshop runs 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 877 Commercial Drive. The department flagged the session for veterans, though it is open to the public.

Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development staff will cover federal career opportunities, guidance on applying through USAJOBS, and resume help tailored to federal applications. Auxiliary aids and services are available on request.

Federal employment in Alaska is shrinking. Alaska lost 4.5% of its federal jobs in 2025, one of the highest rates among states, with a two-year decline put at 15.8%. Alaska News earlier reported that USAJOBS now caps resumes at two pages. Job center materials describe workshops like this one as a response to federal hiring's barriers, not a complete solution.

"Over 500 organizations across the government post job opportunities on USA jobs," Cheryl Sweet said in department guidance issued May 26.
