In Kake, showing up means a vote on fish and game

Anyone in Kake who is old enough to vote can help choose the community's voice on fish and game issues — as long as they show up. At the advisory committee's Aug. 26 meeting, residents who attend may make nominations and vote, as the committee elects members and takes up Board of Fisheries proposals for the 2027-2028 cycle.

The committee's decisions matter in Kake, where nearly every household relies on subsistence salmon and about 60% take part in the harvest, according to state household surveys.

The meeting starts at 3:30 pm at the Organized Village of Kake office. The committee holds 15 open seats, meets once or twice a year, and covers finfish across Southeast Alaska and the game units around it.
