Anchorage appeals board sets five more property hearings for Sept. 22-25

Anchorage's guidance for property owners says state law requires assessment appeal hearings to be substantially complete by June 1. The Board of Equalization has five more sessions next week, Sept. 22 through 25.

The reason is volume. Owners filed a record number of appeals for the 2026 tax year, and the board chair, Ian Moore, said in March that it was "a record number which is beyond the capacity of the existing Board to address in a timely manner." He estimated then, with nine of 21 seats filled, that appeals would not be fully resolved until Nov. 12.

The board has since filled all 21 seats, which an Assembly resolution adopted Sept. 15 noted was the first time in more than two decades. That resolution says the board has completed 118 hearings, against an average of 63.

The count of appeals itself has moved. The March municipal release put it at 1,953. The September resolution says 1,990.

Four of next week's sessions run mornings, with an afternoon session Sept. 23, all at City Hall.
