Anchorage tax appeal hearings continue into September, past the board's stated season

Anchorage property owners who appealed their 2026 assessments may not get a decision until mid-November. Hearings are still running, months past the board's stated January-to-May season.

Board of Equalization Chair Ian Moore told Assembly members that "with two Appeal Sessions daily, each consisting of three board members, appeals would not be fully resolved" before November 12. Moore made that estimate in March.

The board received 1,953 appeals for the 2026 tax year. In a separate step ordered by the mayor, a city review found about 660 over-assessed homes would receive lower valuations.

Only nine of its 21 volunteer seats were filled when Assembly Chair Christopher Constant and Vice Chair Anna Brawley issued a call for applications in March. The Assembly unanimously appointed twelve new members on March 24, bringing the quasi-judicial board back to 21. One of the twelve was a reappointment.

Hearings continue at City Hall, 632 W. 6th Avenue, Suite 310. More are scheduled Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to noon and again from 1 to 4:30 p.m., and Thursday and Friday mornings from 8:30 a.m. to noon.
