Anchorage tax appeal hearings continue into September, past the board's stated season

Anchorage property owners who appealed their 2026 assessments may not get a decision until mid-November. Hearings are still running, months past the board's stated January-to-May season.

Board of Equalization Chair Ian Moore told Assembly members in March that even with two appeal sessions a day, three board members each, the appeals would not all be resolved before Nov. 12.

The board received 1,953 appeals for the 2026 tax year. In a separate step ordered by the mayor, a city review found about 660 over-assessed homes that would get lower valuations.

Only nine of the board's 21 volunteer seats were filled when then-Chair Christopher Constant and then-Vice Chair Anna Brawley put out a call for applications in March. The Assembly unanimously appointed twelve people on March 24, one of them a reappointment, bringing the board back to full strength.

Hearings continue at City Hall, with sessions scheduled Wednesday from 8:30 am to noon and again from 1 to 4:30 pm, and Thursday and Friday mornings from 8:30 am to noon.
