Alaska takes public input Wednesday on child care facility safety rules

Providers, families and advocates can tell state officials what works and what does not in child care safety rules Wednesday. The Alaska Child Care Program Office holds the fifth session of its 2026 community engagement series from noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12, online through Microsoft Teams.

The session covers facility health and safety licensing requirements, equipment and supplies, under regulation 7 AAC 10. The office posted a Teams link for the meeting at https://teams.microsoft.com/meet/23179003449324?p=IrdOOJQ2EswfxnhW5V, and questions can go to [email protected] or 907-269-4500.

"Input gathered during these sessions will help inform and strengthen ongoing program changes and future regulatory development efforts," the office said in its notice. The notice does not propose specific changes to the safety rules.

The session fits into a broader state effort to revisit child care rules. Alaska News previously covered the office's fourth session, which gathered feedback on Child Care Assistance application, eligibility and billing rules. The Department of Health has also proposed raising the income ceiling for child care assistance from 85% to 105% of the state median income. Written comments on that proposal are due Sept. 14.

Local rules are changing too. At a May 15 Anchorage Assembly work session on proposed changes to municipal child care licensing code, Child Care Licensing Supervisor Dawn Skeat said Anchorage is "the only municipality in the state" that governs and enforces child care code, with the rest of Alaska under the state office's jurisdiction.

Three more sessions follow: inclusive child care on Aug. 19, facility programmatic requirements on Sept. 9, and the Child Care Grant Program on Sept. 23.
