Alaska got early frost and a heat advisory in the same week

Prince of Wales Island is under a heat advisory from noon to 7 pm Friday, with highs reaching 80 and the warmest air inland, away from the coast. It is at least the third heat advisory for the island this year, after ones in June and August.

The rest of the state has been going the other direction, early.

Anchorage and the Matanuska Valley were under a frost advisory Tuesday morning, with temperatures down to 29 degrees between 2 and 9 am in the colder pockets: Butte, Muldoon, Campbell Tract and the Eagle River Valley. Anchorage does not typically drop into the 30s until around Sept. 5.

Yakutat followed Wednesday night. Gardeners there were told to cover tender plants or bring them in, though the risk eased before dawn as forecasters walked the expected low up from 32 degrees to 35 before the advisory expired Thursday morning. That is early for Yakutat too.

For the heat on Prince of Wales, the weather service suggests the usual: drink water, keep curtains closed during the day and windows open at night, and check on elderly neighbors, who feel it hardest in homes without air conditioning.
