Frost advisories hit Fairbanks gardens during planting season

The National Weather Service issued a Frost Advisory for the Fairbanks Metro Area on Tuesday morning and followed with Special Weather Statements warning of frost risk across the Interior on subsequent nights this week — unusually late for a region whose growing season historically averages just 110 days.

The Tuesday advisory for Goldstream and Fairbanks warned that temperatures could fall as low as 34 degrees between 2 AM and 9 AM. Goldstream Valley faced the highest frost risk, while frost was possible but less likely in the City of Fairbanks — a split that tracks the physics of radiation frost, with cold air pooling in low-lying valleys on calm, clear nights while ridges and warmer urban surfaces stay above freezing.

Special Weather Statements issued for Tuesday and Wednesday nights warned that temperatures were expected to drop into the low to mid 30s across low-lying river valleys and typical cold spots in the Interior, including the Lower Tanana, Upper Koyukuk, and other cold valley locations. The Weather Service warned that sensitive outdoor vegetation may be killed if left uncovered during the overnight window.

Gardeners can protect plants by covering them overnight or bringing containers indoors during advisory periods.
