A heat advisory covers much of Southeast Alaska through Friday evening

A heat advisory covers much of Southeast Alaska — including Juneau, Skagway, the Haines Borough and Klukwan, Prince of Wales Island, Ketchikan and Annette Island — through 7 p.m. Friday, with temperatures forecast in the lower 80s.

The National Weather Service in Juneau warns the heat could bring illness for people not used to this kind of warmth, especially since most Southeast homes have no air conditioning and are built to hold heat in. The advisory urges residents to drink plenty of fluids, check on elderly and vulnerable neighbors and relatives, close curtains during the day, open windows at night, and use fans or air-conditioned community buildings.

As of Friday, no public cooling location had been posted by the Weather Service or on the Juneau and Ketchikan Gateway Borough websites.
