Yakutat scallop fishery closes as harvest reaches 145,000-pound cap

The commercial weathervane scallop fishery around Yakutat closes at noon Wednesday, with the fleet on track to land its full 145,000-pound catch limit on shucked scallop meat, Alaska Fish and Game said.

That limit has held steady for Yakutat over the past several seasons. Statewide, the cap is about 374,700 pounds — and it's a small fishery: just two boats fished the whole state last season, landing about 317,000 pounds of scallop meat worth an estimated $5.1 million. Outside one other area, the scallop season runs through mid-February.
