Nushagak kings close on the calendar, not on a recovery

Anglers on the Nushagak-Mulchatna have one day left on kings, and it's catch-and-release only. The season closes at 11:59 p.m. Friday, and the emergency orders that have run the drainage since late June, full non-retention, no bait, one single-hook lure, expire with it.

They expire on a date, not on a rebound. Fish and Game projects about 38,600 Nushagak kings past the sonar this season against an inriver goal of 95,000, less than half. The stock has carried a conservation concern since 2022.

That gap has been the fight. Subsistence users along the Nushagak, largely Alaska Native communities, have told federal managers the runs have fallen so far that traditional harvest is no longer reliable, and urged conservation first. Some commercial and sport interests have argued at the Board of Fisheries that tighter king rules go too far given the run's timing and mixed-stock nature.

Sockeye stays generous by contrast, 10 fish a day through Dec. 31. It's the kings the numbers keep flagging.
