The Kodiak Island Borough School District Board of Education has accepted Superintendent Dan Brigman's resignation, less than three months after he took over the district.

Board President Kerry Irons said in a Sept. 28 message to the community that the resignation takes effect Sept. 30. Assistant Superintendent Damon Hargraves becomes acting superintendent Sept. 29, Irons said, and Brigman is on administrative leave until his resignation takes effect. Irons wrote that the board will meet on next steps for district leadership and communicate with staff and the community.

The board held a special meeting Monday afternoon whose agenda included a closed-door session on a personnel matter. The board's message gave no reason for the resignation.

The board chose Brigman in January after a superintendent search, voting unanimously to offer him the job at a starting salary of $175,000 a year plus benefits and a moving stipend. He started July 1, replacing Cyndy Mika, who resigned effective June 30, 2026. His district biography says he previously led districts in North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee, most recently Avery County Schools in North Carolina from January 2020 to November 2024.
