The National Weather Service in Fairbanks warned early Tuesday that wet spots on roads and walkways are freezing across the Fairbanks Metro Area and nearby Interior communities, which could make the morning commute slick.

Forecasters said wet spots that lingered through the day have begun to freeze as temperatures drop below freezing. They asked drivers and anyone out walking to use extra caution because they may come across icy spots.

That special weather statement runs until 10 am. It covers the Fairbanks Metro Area, Goldstream Valley and Nenana Hills, Two Rivers, Eielson Air Force Base and Salcha, Nenana, the Chatanika River Valley, Delta Junction, the Tanana Flats, the Upper Tanana Valley, the Upper Chena River Valley, Fortymile Country and the Central Interior. It also covers the northern and southern Denali Borough, the White Mountains and High Terrain South of the Yukon River, and the Eastern Alaska Range both north and south of Trims Camp.

A second statement covers the Upper Koyukuk Valley, the Yukon Flats, the Dalton Highway summits and the south slopes of the Central and Eastern Brooks Range until noon. Observations there showed areas of mist, flurries and drizzle with temperatures around freezing, and forecasters said any mist or drizzle Tuesday morning could form patchy ice. They said that risk will end this afternoon as temperatures rise above freezing in most spots.

The weather service rates the hazard in both areas as moderate.
