FEMA obligates about $14,500 for Umkumiut building contents destroyed in 2025 storms

FEMA on Nov. 2 obligated $14,535.57 for the Native Village of Umkumiut to replace building contents destroyed in the October 2025 storms. The federal share covers part of a $19,380.75 project, according to FEMA's project record. FEMA classifies it as a small project in its buildings and equipment category.

The record lists the village under the Lower Kuskokwim Regional Educational Attendance Area, and FEMA's applicant record gives a Nightmute address. A University of Alaska Fairbanks storm report on Typhoon Halong found a majority of homes damaged in Umkumiut, a subsistence camp "which provides 75% of subsistence foods to Nightmute."

This is the village's fourth obligated project since July, about $104,000 in federal share on about $139,000 in project costs. FEMA obligated money for carpenter tools on July 11 and damaged vehicles on Aug. 14. On Oct. 14, it obligated $40,643.65 toward a $54,191.53 project for emergency repairs.

Obligated money is the grant funding FEMA makes available to the state for approved projects. FEMA's records for the disaster list no payments.

Much larger requests are still early in the process. A separate FEMA dataset lists seven active Umkumiut projects worth about $5.2 million. Three of them, about $5 million in costs entered, are in the phase where FEMA works to "capture and document all incident-related damages." The dataset gives no project titles.

The president declared the major disaster on Oct. 22, 2025, for severe storms, flooding and the remnants of Typhoon Halong. FEMA has obligated $9,056,709 in public aid for the disaster, including about $768,000 in the state's management costs. Across the disaster, 21 of 391 active projects worth about $275.1 million have been obligated, up from 20 of 385 when Alaska News reported on Oct. 28.
