FAA seeks permit for weather station at Coffman Cove seaplane base
The Federal Aviation Administration is seeking a state permit to install a visual weather observation system at the Coffman Cove Seaplane Base on Prince of Wales Island.
The Alaska Department of Natural Resources is reviewing the application. The FAA is requesting a 20-year permit, with proposed use beginning Oct. 12.
A 2003 FAA report described Southeast Alaska as having highly variable weather, low ceilings and fog, and noted that many destinations lacked local weather reporting. The permit notice does not state when the proposed equipment would be installed or what observations it would provide.
