Coast Guard awards nearly $5 million to fix moisture damage in Cordova family housing

The Coast Guard will spend nearly $5 million over the next year fixing moisture damage in the duplexes that house its families in Cordova.

Weldin Construction of Wasilla received the order Sept. 23, with work scheduled to wrap up in October 2027.

A Coast Guard acquisition forecast describes the job as protecting the buildings from long-term moisture damage. That means replacing failing cement-board siding, repairing the ventilation system and improving the insulation, attic vents and roof framing. The forecast put the cost at $5 million to $10 million.

It is the largest Homeland Security contract carried out in Cordova since 2008, when the Coast Guard spent about $25 million to build seven family housing units there, according to federal spending records.

The Coast Guard's Cordova housing last had major exterior work a decade ago. The agency paid about $4.4 million in 2015 for new siding and interior repairs, work that finished in 2016.
