The Coast Guard is repairing a fire-damaged barracks at Kodiak

Repairs to a fire-damaged barracks at Coast Guard Base Kodiak begin Tuesday under a contract worth just under $100,000, with the work due to finish Dec. 11.

The building is Barracks 1, one of a cluster of two-story structures built for the Navy in 1940 and remodeled several times since. Nothing in the contract record says when the fire happened, how it started, or whether anyone living there had to move out.

The Coast Guard awarded the job to Hunatek Federal Services, a subsidiary of Huna Totem Corporation, the village corporation for Hoonah. It was not competed and drew a single bid.

The base is in the middle of a larger buildout. The Coast Guard has awarded $143.4 million at Kodiak to construct 30 family housing units, due in 2028, and a child development center for more than 200 children, due in early 2029. Kodiak is also preparing to homeport the first of two new Arctic Security Cutters in 2028.
