Companies that run Bering Sea pollock catcher-processors will recruit workers from 10 am to noon Thursday, Oct. 29, at the Anchorage Midtown Job Center.

Applicants must first apply to a participating company, preregister and complete a seafood orientation, held at 9 am Monday through Friday, the Alaska Job Center Network listing says. They must be physically in Alaska to get a referral, according to the state's processor preparation page.

The state's flyer describes six-week to four-month contracts on a catcher-processor vessel or at a shore plant, up to seven days a week during the fishery's B season. Applicants must speak and understand basic English and pass a health exam, drug screen and criminal background check. Pay is either a percentage of the catch or a case rate, depending on the company. Room, board and transportation are provided to workers who complete their contract.

The At-Sea Processors Association, a trade group, is hosting the job fair. The flyer says hiring companies could include American Seafoods, Arctic Storm, Coastal Villages Region Fund, Glacier Fish and Trident Seafoods. The association says its members run 15 U.S.-flag catcher-processors in the Eastern Bering Sea pollock fishery, which it says accounts for more than a third of U.S. fishery landings and more than 3 billion seafood meals a year.

The job center network also lists seafood jobs by occupation and location and directs applicants to AlaskaJobs and company recruitment sites.
