Alaska makes its first awards under a $272 million rural health program
The Alaska Department of Health intends to award more than $4.5 million to 19 health projects across the state, the first selections under Alaska's $272 million federal rural health award. The department announced them Friday and will release more each Friday as they're finalized, rather than wait for the whole review to finish.
The selected projects are meant to expand access to care, strengthen the health workforce, improve infrastructure and support new approaches in rural and hub communities. The notices are statements of intent, not final awards, with amounts and terms still subject to budget review and a signed grant agreement.
"These awards represent more than individual projects, they represent a long-term investment in healthier communities across Alaska," said Commissioner Heidi Hedberg. "Throughout this process, we've heard directly from communities about the challenges they face and the solutions they believe will make the greatest difference."
The money comes from the first year of the federal Rural Health Transformation Program, a $50 billion, five-year national initiative, under which CMS awarded Alaska about $272 million. Demand far outstripped it: the department received nearly 1,800 letters of interest and roughly $2.5 billion in first-year requests against the $272 million available.
First-year funds must be fully spent by Sept. 30, 2027, or they revert to the federal government. The department expects to open the year-two application period in late summer 2026 and plans a public dashboard of all the investments.
