A wind advisory covers Ketchikan and Metlakatla until 2 pm Tuesday

Gusts up to 40 mph are forecast for Ketchikan and Metlakatla through 2 pm Tuesday, strong enough to bring down tree limbs.

The National Weather Service in Juneau issued the advisory at 7:50 am for the Ketchikan Gateway Borough and Annette Island. Southeast winds of 15 to 25 mph are expected as a front pushes inland, with gusts able to move unsecured objects and make travel difficult.

Forecasters called this front weaker and more typical for the season, with gusts up to 30 mph likely around Prince of Wales Island, Annette Island and Ketchikan. The Gulf has been sending one low after another at the state for a week.

The bigger wind comes later, and farther north. The weather service in Fairbanks has a high wind watch out for the northern Denali Borough and the eastern Alaska Range north of Trims Camp and Windy Pass, from Thursday evening through Saturday afternoon. Gusts of 60 to 70 mph are possible, strongest late Thursday night into Friday morning, though forecasters say the exact strength is still uncertain.
