A stolen pickup went through the doors of three Tongass Avenue businesses

A stolen pickup was driven through the entrances of three Ketchikan businesses overnight on Sept. 4, leaving damage estimated between $90,000 and $100,000.

The three sit along Tongass Avenue, the town's main commercial corridor: the McDonald's, Madison Lumber and Hardware, which has sold building materials in Southeast since 1967, and Tongass Marine Store.

Prosecutors charged Dale Withem, 48, and a grand jury indicted him last week on four counts of third-degree criminal mischief and two counts of first-degree vehicle theft, all class C felonies, plus a misdemeanor count of reckless driving.

The court file itself gives none of this away. Each criminal mischief count recites only the statutory minimum of $750 in damage. No business is named and no total appears.

Withem is scheduled for arraignment at 2:30 pm Thursday before Superior Court Judge Katherine Lybrand. He is represented by the Public Defender Agency in Ketchikan. The charges are allegations and have not been tested in court.
