Juneau man charged with felony assault after Savikko Park hit-and-run
Juneau police arrested a 32-year-old Juneau man Sunday, Oct. 11, and charged him with first-degree assault after a pedestrian was struck in the Savikko Park parking lot in Douglas.
The pedestrian, a 49-year-old Juneau resident, was medevaced to Seattle with serious injuries, including a broken pelvis, according to a Juneau Police Department release.
First-degree assault is a class A felony. The man also faces a class B felony charge of failing to give information and render assistance as the driver.
Officers responded to a report of a hit-and-run at about 12:49 am, police said. They found the pedestrian injured on a trail leading from the parking lot toward Sandy Beach. Emergency medical crews took the pedestrian to a hospital before the flight to Seattle.
At about noon, officers found a 2005 Ford Explorer they believe was involved on Lawson Creek Road. At about 1:10 pm, the vehicle's driver came to the police substation and spoke with officers, police said. He was arrested and taken to Lemon Creek Correctional Center.
Police said the allegations are based on a preliminary investigation and may change as it continues. Charges are accusations, and the man is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
