A small Alutiiq village corporation near Kodiak has built a $200 million federal business
An Anchorage company owned by a small Alaska Native village corporation is spending this fall pulling asbestos tile and carpet out of a federal courthouse in Ocala, Florida — one job in a federal contracting business that has grown to more than $200 million in work.
The company, Katmai Integrated Solutions, is wholly owned by Ouzinkie Native Corporation, a village corporation formed in 1973 for Alutiiq shareholders from Ouzinkie, a community on Spruce Island near Kodiak. It began with 339 shareholders and has about 527 today.
Katmai does the work as an Alaska Native Corporation whose subsidiaries are certified under the Small Business Administration's 8(a) program, which lets them take federal contracts without competing for them. The program is built to let Alaska Native corporations earn federal revenue nationally and channel it back to their shareholders.
Katmai's largest presence is in Florida, where it has recorded about $100 million in federal work across 120 orders; Alaska accounts for $9.5 million. The Ocala courthouse job is a small piece of a $24.9 million agreement to work on nine federal buildings in Tampa, Jacksonville, Orlando, Ocala and Fort Myers through 2028. That agreement was awarded without competition and drew a single offer.
