A new casino has opened on North Douglas, as a cruise dock nearby prepares to bring more ships

Tlingit & Haida has opened a casino on North Douglas — Two Coppers Casino, a Class II gaming hall on Fish Creek Road, developed with the George Family. It arrives as the same stretch of the island is set to see more cruise traffic, with new docks going in that could bring several ships at a time.

The Douglas Advisory Board — a seven-member panel of island residents that represents the community to Juneau's Assembly — is set to hear a briefing on both the cruise dock and the gambling hall on Wednesday, though the board will only take in the report, not vote on anything.

At a recent city planning session, one resident noted that new docks going in at the end of the island could push the number of ships there toward seven. Cruise tourism is a major force in Juneau: a city-commissioned study found the industry generated about $375 million in direct spending and supported some 3,850 jobs in 2023.
