A Hoonah oyster farm wants to grow to about 10 acres

Kaawu Oyster Company is seeking to amend and renew its 10-year aquatic farm lease at Port Frederick near Hoonah, under a notice the Alaska Department of Natural Resources published Wednesday. The amendment would add two parcels and gear, bringing the site to 9.98 acres of state tide and submerged lands, and the renewal would run 20 years.

The farm, owned by Anthony Lindoff, grows Pacific oysters on rafts and floating longline systems in the largely Tlingit community. The same lease was subject to a 2019 amendment application for a work raft, which was later closed.

DNR has made a preliminary decision to offer both the amendment and the renewal. A final decision has not been issued.

Written comments are due Sept. 28, and only people who comment may appeal the final decision.
