A fuel break cleared years ago helped keep the Grandview Fire out of Sterling

Vegetation cleared years ago near a powerline corridor outside Sterling helped stop the Grandview Fire from reaching the community, state fire officials said. The cleared ground — a 9.4-acre patch inside a broader interagency fuel break built in 2019 and 2020 — starved the fire of fuel and gave crews a place to make a stand, keeping it from advancing north.

Chugachmiut Forestry crews had done the fuel-reduction work on land owned by the Kenai Natives Association, funded by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. When the fire hit that ground, crews laid retardant along the break and cut a dozer line to pin the fire in.

The Grandview Fire started from an escaped campfire and burned about 90 acres. Alaska News covered its early days, when it closed Swanson River Road and prompted Homer Electric Association to briefly de-energize the transmission line so water scoopers could work. It reached containment June 23 with no injuries and no structures lost.

"A key factor in the successful containment," the Alaska Division of Forestry & Fire Protection said, "was the interagency fuel break constructed in 2019 and 2020." Nathan Lojewski of Chugachmiut said crews were "proud of... the role their work played in helping protect the Sterling community," and pointed to the project as an example of how coordination among tribes, landowners and agencies can strengthen wildfire resilience.

Residents had watched the same landscape with less confidence as the fire took off. "The kenai peninsula is a tender box. Hasn't rained in weeks," one wrote on X, describing a small smoke cloud that had already grown into a major fire.
