Van Horn Road is closed at University Avenue with no detour posted

Van Horn Road is fully closed at University Avenue in Fairbanks for paving, with no detour posted and no estimate of when it reopens.

The state's traffic alert is a little muddled about what's actually shut. It's filed under Van Horn Road, but the description says University Avenue will be closed for paving. Drivers headed for either should plan on finding the route blocked.

Van Horn carries about 7,200 vehicles a day and serves as secondary access to the Eastside from areas east of the airport, so freight haulers, cyclists and pedestrians who use the corridor will need to go around.

The closure is part of a larger stretch of work in the area. The main entrance to South University Avenue was shut for a week earlier this month for a bicycle and pedestrian project, and the state and contractor Great Northwest Inc. are in the middle of widening and rebuilding University Avenue from the Mitchell Expressway to Thomas Street, work aimed at bringing down a high crash rate.
