A Fairbanks entrance is closed while crews build a year-round bike path

The main entrance to South University Avenue in Fairbanks has been closed since Monday and is expected to stay closed through Sept. 14. The state has not posted hours, a detour, or whether people on foot or bikes can still get through.

The work is the start of a 1.8-mile path for bicycles and pedestrians running up the east side of University Avenue South, from the Mitchell Expressway to Armistead Way. It is designed for year-round use, meaning it is meant to be usable through a Fairbanks winter rather than disappearing under snow until spring.

Crews are also working on East Ramp Road, 7 am to 7 pm Monday through Saturday. When it is finished the path is to connect to East Ramp airport facilities and existing sidewalks, with new pavement, drainage and signs.
