Troopers find missing hunter near Tanana after weather grounded search a day

Alaska Wildlife Troopers located a hunter missing near Tanana on Wednesday, Sept. 16, after weather kept aircraft from searching the day before, according to a dispatch from Alaska Wildlife Troopers. He declined medical treatment and was returned to camp.

His hunting partner reported he had not returned as planned on Monday, Sept. 14. Troopers received the report Sept. 15, but weather prevented an aerial search that day. Helo 2 and Helo 7 responded Wednesday and located him.

The National Weather Service had issued a wind advisory for the Tanana area from 10 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15, until 10 p.m. Wednesday, and listed overcast conditions at Tanana's Calhoun Memorial Airport. Troopers did not specify the conditions during the search.

Other cases this month include a Sept. 1 search for a missing hunter near Halibut Cove and the Sept. 7 rescue of a moose hunter after a medical emergency on the Chistochina River.

On the Tanana Chiefs Conference's Sept. 7 weekly update, case manager Tiffany Yatlin said, "Hunting season is underway across interior Alaska. And we want to remind everyone heading out on the land and river to stay safe."
