Three Koniag subsidiaries win $58.5 million in GSA contracts for SBA tech work

Three Anchorage-based Koniag Inc. subsidiaries received a combined $58.5 million in federal information-technology contracts over two days in September, all issued through the General Services Administration's Federal Acquisition Service to support the U.S. Small Business Administration.

Koniag Operations Services LLC received $23,659,930 on Sept. 9 for SBA enterprise security and identity services, under award 47QACA26C0065. The day before, Koniag Professional Services LLC received $21,033,490 for SBA customer-relationship-management integration and data platform services, and Koniag Advisory and Business Solutions LLC received $13,865,491 for SBA digital workplace and governance services. All three run roughly one year, into September 2027, per USAspending.gov. The records do not say whether the contracts were competed or sole-sourced, or whether they fall under 8(a), the SBA business development program through which certified disadvantaged firms may qualify for set-aside or sole-source contracts.

Koniag Professional Services also holds three smaller State Department awards: $490,344 for OIG investigations executive and hotline support running Sept. 15, 2026, through Sept. 14, 2027, and two one-year OIG support contracts totaling roughly $484,632.

Koniag subsidiaries have collected smaller federal awards this fall, including $1.35 million from the USDA's Rural Housing Service for cybersecurity work and about $2.06 million from the Social Security Administration for print services. The 8(a) program is under separate scrutiny: Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered a line-by-line Pentagon review of 8(a) contracts worth more than $20 million, and the Government Accountability Office testified in 2020 that it had found "persistent weaknesses in the Small Business Administration's (SBA) oversight and monitoring of Tribal 8(a) firms." That review targets Pentagon contracts, not these GSA-issued awards supporting SBA.

At a May 21 RDC Breakfast Forum in Anchorage, Mike Torres of Huna Totem Corporation described the pressure on Native contractors: "There's been a number of executive orders that have been focused on consolidation and having procurements run through GSA." Torres said contractors also deliver value to shareholders and to Alaska communities.
