USDA's Rural Housing Service awards $1.35 million cybersecurity contract to Anchorage's Koniag IT Systems

Koniag, the ANCSA regional corporation for the Kodiak Island region and more than 4,000 Alaska Native shareholders, holds federal contracts through its subsidiaries worth well over $150 million.

They include a $103 million records contract with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, a $24.6 million cybersecurity contract with Washington Headquarters Services, which supports the Pentagon, and a $23.5 million cloud order for the Defense Health Agency.

The newest is smaller. The Agriculture Department's Rural Housing Service awarded Koniag IT Systems $1.35 million this month for cybersecurity, compliance and quality assurance support running into 2027. The award record does not say which systems or data it covers. The order was competed among companies holding the same governmentwide contract, and drew one offer.

Nicole Borromeo, executive vice president and general counsel of the Alaska Federation of Natives, has argued that Alaska Native corporations needed a way into that market at all, saying "the Boeings, the Raytheons of the world" long held most of the contracting space, and comparing the preference to those for veteran-owned and women-owned firms.
