SSA awards Anchorage's Koniag IT Systems $2 million for print work in Durham and Baltimore

An Anchorage company owned by Koniag will print and mail Social Security cards for the next year, under two contracts worth about $2.06 million.

Koniag IT Systems took $1,275,759 for the work at the Social Security Administration's print and mail facility in Baltimore, and $781,125 for the same at its Durham facility. Both run through August 2027, and both cover printing and inserting Social Security cards and public notices.

The company is a subsidiary of Koniag, Inc., the regional corporation for the Kodiak area. It is listed in Anchorage; the work is in Maryland and North Carolina.

That gap is the subject of an ongoing argument about what these contracts return to Alaska. A Commonwealth North review found the state's 12 Native regional corporations reported combined 2022 revenue of $13.5 billion, roughly two-thirds of it earned outside Alaska, and distribute between $300 million and $350 million a year through dividends, elder benefits and scholarships.

"If this work is happening in the lower 48 or globally and employees are based there, what does it have to do with us?" Kevin Berry asked at a Commonwealth North panel in Anchorage.
