South University Avenue main entrance closed through Sept. 14 for bike path work

Drivers, cyclists and pedestrians in Fairbanks cannot use the main entrance to South University Avenue through Monday, Sept. 14. The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities closed the entrance Sept. 8 for work on the University Avenue South Bicycle/Pedestrian Facility.

Alaska 511 lists the closure as roadwork and maintenance, a full closure, with no detour and no lane-use information posted. The advisory does not say what hours the closure applies or whether pedestrians and cyclists can still pass through the entrance. The state last updated the traffic listing Sept. 8, 2026, at 8:50 a.m. AKDT.

FAST Planning, the Fairbanks area's metropolitan planning organization, describes the project in its Connect Fairbanks Plan as a year-round path for bicycles and pedestrians on the east side of University Avenue South. The path will run 1.8 miles from the Mitchell Expressway to Armistead Way. Fairbanks North Star Borough records say the facility will connect to East Ramp airport facilities and existing sidewalks, with new pavement, drainage work and signage.

At a Nov. 19, 2025, Alaska DOT&PF advertising update, Al Beck said, "We have one project currently on the advertising calendar and it should be opening up here pretty soon, which is University Avenue South Bicycle Pedestrian Facility."
