Rezanof Drive closes nightly in downtown Kodiak through September

Downtown Kodiak loses one of its main routes overnight starting Wednesday. Rezanof Drive will close nightly from 6 pm to 6 am between Marine Way and Jack Hinkle Way, and the closures run through the end of September.

Traffic detours onto Shelikof Street between Pier 2 and Marine Way. Flaggers will be posted to get residents and businesses to properties along the closed stretch. Elsewhere on Rezanof, drivers should expect short waits in the early evening as crews hold and release traffic.

What the state hasn't said is what the work is for. The closure was announced through an Alaska 511 traffic alert, which doesn't name a project, and as of Tuesday the transportation department had published nothing else — no release, and no downtown Rezanof project on its Southcoast Region list.

The one Rezanof Drive project the department does maintain a page for is a different job: an accessibility rebuild of sidewalks and curb ramps between Marine Way and Benny Benson Drive, still in design, with construction not expected until spring 2028.
